I stumbled upon this film countless times, but the viewing was delayed. And then, when all the adventures of the budget undead were examined, a familiar cover with cute faces in the frontal lobe loomed on the horizon. Delight. Everything starts in the best traditions of the eighties, a dirty motel, naive cops, a father who chose the good old violence as a method of education. The ending is a little predictable. But! After all, there was a son!
And so, a kind-hearted officer, with a face similar to Stacy Keach (but not him), takes his stepson under his wing. As usual, a number of years pass. The boy becomes a husband in form and weapon. And in the city of Angels, meanwhile, someone is doing shocking atrocities, and everything would be familiar if the evil did not have a pronounced subtext of hatred towards the police.
It is here that a new recruit with a secret has a chance to reveal his talent to the fullest ...
Cronenberg can and should be respected. Not only for the characteristic handwriting, but also for the army of followers. Scanners can be roughly attributed to a free, more grotesque, and less dramatic interpretation. Kakbe here the main character, in principle, gets along with his gift, and does not feel much pressure from others. On the contrary, he helps the unbalanced law enforcement system in every possible way. The emphasis was shifted towards the Hollywood, pretentious action movie. About revenge and finding yourself, through a vocation to help people. At the same time, it does not smell of drama, a proud action in the spirit of the same eighties. For the mid-nineties does not smell. Why? Grotesque, with all the fantastic opuses and twists and turns, the ultra-pathos goes off scale, and this becomes noticeable with the appearance of antagonists. It's my turn to be surprised.
Richard Lynch is like Malcolm McDowell, or Robert Englund. For some reason, this actor passed me by, which is sad. For those sad eyes and gray strands make Lynch's hero the perfect embodiment of Doctor Evil. Overly pretentious, and therefore a quality representative. And along with him is a heavy metal sex assistant, what else is needed for a film about psychokinetic crimes? In films of this kind, the emphasis and charm, hold on to negative manifestations. I was frantically watching all these brain vibrations.
Where, outwardly, similar to the young Brad Dourif, the protagonist, convulses, spewing information from the minds of the counter. Meanwhile, somewhere nearby, like Professor Moriarty, Richard Lynch is intriguing by releasing the product of his scientific research. Beauty, charm, and forever bygone era. One thing is clear. In light of the time frame, the tape has earned its cult status through video distribution and not on large screens. Of course, the eighties gave way to progress, but Scanners are more than a worthy example of the genre.
