A top-secret research center received a DNA formula from outer space, which was reproduced and crossed with a woman's DNA. The result was a child, a girl who grew by leaps and bounds. And not even by the hour, but by the minutes.

Frightened by the results of the experiment, the scientists decided to destroy the test creature, but it escaped by breaking the bulletproof glass. And the creature had already turned from a girl into a woman with a very sexy appearance and was eager to reproduce, which it began to do. But inside her lurked a terrifying monster that killed the males after mating.

To catch her a special group of experts was created, which followed the bloody trail of a female obsessed with the maternal instinct from outer space...

'Species' is almost a paragon of violent and, in places, even creepy sci-fi, in which crazy life forms fight for existence, trying to impregnate themselves with whatever it is.

Of course, there's no resemblance to 'Aliens' or 'Cryptozoids,' for example. Still, the scope leaves much to be desired, and the final monster is utterly unimpressive. What is happening at the very beginning and before the finale is capable of causing genuine horror, or at least worrying about the protagonists. The first 'birth' in general can claim to be the creepiest or even the most disgusting in the history of the genre, with the exception of low-budget thrash horror films of the 80s and 90s. And the atmosphere of the film leaves no doubt - this is serious and sometimes terrifying sci-fi.

What clinches it is the main monster - first a pretty girl and then a woman played by Natasha Henstridge. Had it been just another man in a suit or even a modification of a space cockroach, 'Species' might not have been memorable. But when a model-looking aunt is doing the real massacre while raping men in her way, it looks completely different. Of course, the aunt is just a shell, which hides a shapeless red biomass, subject to the only instinct - reproduction. And it is up to Michael Madsen and his partner with the pistols to prevent it, and unfortunately, there is nothing original to be found here.

The movie is not overly dynamic, but it is not particularly boring either. The moments with the "individual" redeem the unoriginal plot and the absurd actions of the main characters. The finale, however, bumped up in terms of the beast's design, compared to the beginning. But the music succeeded - it was really well chosen, especially in the moments when the beast appears. Watching his mutilations is not always pleasant, but very impressive. Besides, how many sci-fi horror movies where the main monster is a woman?
