For me, as a rather lazy person, without proper humanitarian education and lack of a creative streak, it is usually quite difficult for me to swing to write a review for a film (I'm not even talking about other aspects of life that are different from my hobby for cinema).
And in order to mature, to burn with desire and self-actualize in this field - you need some kind of impetus. In this case, such a catalyst is a specific movie that has excited my mind, which becomes the subject of the so-called review. I used this term only for grammar sake. All of the following can be called much more modest: feedback, opinion, comment, stream of consciousness.
This time my victim was "The Last Action Hero" (aka "The Last Action Hero").
Yes, it's not the most intellectual film work, but the wisdom of playing film critics, eloquently analyzing the masterpieces of the arthouse is not my strong point.
Essentially.
In the wake of the frenzied popularity of Arnold Schwarzenegger (hereinafter Arnie) fifteen years ago directed by John McTiernan, who can rightfully be called a "True action director", with the participation of such not the last people in Hollywood as Shane Black (script), Dean Semler (cameraman) and Michael Kamen (composer), a completely extraordinary film was created, filmed in the genre of a hurricane action movie (but in the format of PG-13) with a fantasy and comedic touch.
Unfortunately, such a nuclear mixture was not appreciated by either critics or viewers (both the box office failure and low ratings on movie sites are depressing).
It seems to me that the average moviegoer was simply not ready for such a film product. The people didn't get it, didn't cut the chip, didn't understand what the tsimus was. But this film undoubtedly possesses its own battalion of fans. Some of them recruited immediately and forever, someone (like me, for example) only eventually realized the beauty of The Last Movie Hero.
Guys, this movie is one big banter (like, for example, "Desperate" by Rodriguez or "Kind of cool cops" by Wright). Everything that moves, starting from cliches and clichés of Hollywood action movies and ending with Arnie's love (real, and there are already two of them according to the plot) to the Planet Hollywood restaurant chain, jokes. In addition, a handful of various movie quotes (from "E. T." Spielberg to "The Seventh Seal" by Bergman) are scattered throughout the film with the generous hand of the scriptwriters. Well, and where in a film with that name without the notorious action. The drive just pours out of the screen, with a constant comic effect. From this point of view, the greatest thrill you get is from the central part of the film, with the action in a parallel world.
By the way, about the worlds. To emphasize the contrast between fantasy Los Angeles and real New York, the creators got the mark "Ex. ". And the idea itself, the path is not original, and has a teenage inclination, it is very exciting and competently implemented.
To be honest, I'm 100% sure I won't tell you why "Last Action Hero" made such a positive impression on me the last time I watched it. Maybe from the fact that with age such easy and simple films became anyway to me (in those young years of cinema it seemed like another stupid action movie), or from the joy of recognizing cinema quotations and realizing all the mockery and parody of the action - the feelings that accompanied me throughout the entire viewing , or from again (after the revision of "Terminators", "Predator" and "Commando") the emerging reverent attitude to Arnie's films, to his unprecedented charisma.
One way or another, "The Last Movie Hero" delighted me infinitely. Gave me two hours of cinematic pleasure. I allowed myself to be included in the list of the best entertaining-parody-comedy films. And start counting Jack Slater as one of Arnie's best characters.
