Film Description
On April 26, 1988, chemist Valery Legasov, safely hiding six audiocassettes with his memories, is hung up in his apartment.

On April 26, 1986 at 1:23:45 am, during a safety experiment at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, a reactor explosion and fire occur. Alerted firefighters without special protection arrive at the scene of the accident, not suspecting that they are in the epicenter of the largest man-made disaster in human history. The leadership of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant assures the Kremlin that the situation is under control and the radiation background is normal, but at the insistence of academician Legasov, he, together with the deputy chairman of the Council of Ministers Boris Shcherbina, are sent to investigate what is happening on the spot.

4k movies reviews
The accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant is an event that has become one of the original symbols of the decline of the Soviet Union, along with the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, Perestroika and Yeltsin's performance on a tank near the walls of the White House in Moscow. The Chernobyl NPP and the Exclusion Zone have become a kind of cult throughout the post-Soviet space, both among young people (thanks to the well-known series of games) and among the older stratum, because for many years after 1986, any Soviet guy who left for the army could easily get into Chernobyl, eliminate the consequences of that terrible accident.

But it was not customary to remember the causes of the tragedy, both in Soviet times and in subsequent years of young Russia. Why? The guilty ones seemed to be found, although later their guilt became not as obvious as the Soviet authorities wanted. The highest nomenklatura officials, hushing up the true scale of the tragedy, remained in their places and did not even think to resign, and the liquidators who served at the scene of the tragedy turned out to be unnecessary, abandoned, orphaned sons of their dead fatherland, like many in those difficult times.

Horror films and teenage series about time travel were filmed about the Chernobyl disaster, even a love story was filmed against the background of the first days of the accident, but ... Hands did not reach the real story based on the memoirs of eyewitnesses of those days. For obvious reasons, Russian filmmakers will have to remember again about the liquidators who are dying from cancer, and secondly, to admit the miscalculations in the construction of the station itself, exact copies of which (typical reactors) are still located on the territory of the Russian Federation.

In this regard, the American cable channel HBO decides to personally touch upon the history of the tragedy in Chernobyl. To touch without the classic cranberries, funny earflaps and other scam, which have become an integral part of films about Russians. HBO takes a completely different approach, trying to show the horror of a fight with an enemy you can't see in the most authentic and wildly atmospheric way. To convey the horror that pierces to the bone, when just being in a certain area is regarded as a stroke of a pen on your own death certificate.

Soviet aesthetics in every shot, from double-breasted jackets with Central Committee badges on the lapels of party officials and ending with Soviet electric meters, cars, real firefighters' talks on the day of that tragedy, and so on. Everything was done with the utmost respect for those who laid down their lives on the altar of salvation for their native land. No executions, which is surprising and other horror of the blood-red regime, only voluntary self-sacrifice, because: "If you do not, then no one will."

There are two main characters in the film, and each should be discussed in more detail, comparing their real prototypes and screen images:

Legasov Valery Alekseevich, the role was played by Jared Harris, a Soviet inorganic chemist, presented in the series as a specialist in nuclear power engineering, but in reality Valery Alekseevich had nothing to do with the nuclear industry. As in the series, I got into the government commission to investigate the causes and liquidation of the consequences of the accident in the first days, having spent 4 months in Chernobyl, instead of the allowable 3 weeks. Legasov developed a special mixture of sand and boron, thanks to which it was possible to stop the fire in the core for a while, until further decisions were made.

After speaking at the IAEA for the reasons of the Chernobyl accident, he fell out of favor with the first president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev (also present in the series as a character), from which Legasov is removed from the award lists for the Hero of Socialist Labor, and Valery Alekseevich himself is being monitored by comrades KGB (sounds like cranberries, don't be a real fact). On April 28, 1988, Academician Legasov was supposed to speak with his results about the tragedy, but the day before that he was found hanged at home (the starting point of the series).

Jared Harris fits perfectly into the image of a scientist whose madness for the sake of saving people borders on suicidal audacity. He played a modest but demanding man who cares with all his heart for the lives of ordinary people. Harris's hero is faced with everything, with the lack of understanding of the authorities, with the hope for the "Russian maybe", with the suppression of facts and those nomenclature games, without which politics as a phenomenon is impossible. Harris is by far the most key candidate for the Globe for Best Performance in a Drama Series right now.

The second main character of the series, Boris Evdokimovich Shcherbina, was played by the wonderful Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgard. In those years, Boris Shcherbina was the Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, the fifth most important position in the country. Initially trusting the stories of the Pripyat officials, Shcherbina did not betray the special significance of the accident. As shown in the series, Boris accused Legasov of alarmism and fanning hysteria. But upon arrival in Pripyat, together with academician Legasov, he gave the order for the immediate evacuation of the city and the creation of a 30-kilometer exclusion zone. Shcherbina, being a brilliant manager, a man who supplied cartridges and supplies to the advancing units of the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War, understood that in the case of Chernobyl, it would not be possible to write off everything for an ordinary accident.

The serial Shcherbin turned out to be much more impressive in terms of external data than the real prototype, but in this case, such a 'chiseled authority' by Skarsgard was a hit in the top ten. The scriptwriters showed Shcherbin as a powerful, strong-willed person, albeit not without a share of the careerism inherent in politicians. Shcherbina in the series does not look like a counterbalance for Legasov; rather, on the contrary, she accepts his point of view and listens to it, which is unusual for politicians with an ever-inflated PSI.

Was the controversial material selected for the script? Maybe. Still, many of Legasov's memories on cassettes were deliberately erased, as one version says, and Grigory Medvedev's 'Chernobyl Notebook' was criticized by people who were directly at the station that night, including Anatoly Dyatlov, deputy chief engineer for the operation of the ChNPP , whose persona still causes a lot of controversy and is shown in the series with the most biased for the worse.

Despite all this, the fact remains that it is the enemies, the Americans, branded on all Federal channels, who tell about the tragedy of our people. In the same way as they told about the tragedy of the Kursk submarine (very lousy, but still), while our leaders prefer not to think about it. And if you start reading materials on the Chernobyl tragedy, not even the "secret archives of the KGB," but publicly available information - your hair stands on end due to the negligence of individual government officials.

Definitely the best series about the Chernobyl tragedy.

The very case when must see is inserted not for the sake of a word of mouth.
