Film Description
In the summer of 1979, several small-town teenagers filming an amateur movie with Super 8 witnessed a train crash. And they soon begin to suspect that this was not just an accident. Strange disappearances and unexplained events begin to take place in the town, and the local sheriff tries to solve their mystery - something far more terrifying than anyone could imagine.

4k movies reviews
J.J. Abrams is absolutely deservedly one of the outstanding figures of world cinema. Having made a successful career in television and proved himself superbly as a talented screenwriter, he showed himself excellently in directing. Designed to spark a surge of nostalgia for the quality science fiction of the 1980s, films such as 'Alien' and 'Close Encounters of the Third Degree' have become major events in the world of cinema. And it is not in vain that the author of these films, the great Steven Spielberg, acted as a producer here. Such a creative tandem set up exclusively for a positive result.

The film gets its name from a Super 8 camera and 8mm film. It was on them that the filmmakers filmed their amateur pictures. This movie does not expand the boundaries of genres, does not bring originality and does not make discoveries. On the contrary, we have already seen all this more than once. On the one hand, we have a naive children's film, but in which elements of science fiction, detective thriller, action movie, family drama and comedy are perfectly intertwined. Here there was a place for government conspiracies, and inexplicable disappearances, and mystical phenomena. Unfortunately, the fine line between adult and children's cinema is not very clear, which makes it sometimes difficult to determine the main line of the film. This does not interfere with viewing, but is a kind of nuance.

Since the events of the tape take place in 1979, the film crew has made a lot of efforts to recreate the era of that time. This is especially noticeable in details, ranging from the cars to the clothes of the heroes. Such elaboration of details allows the viewer to better feel the atmosphere of the film and observe the events taking place on the screen with interest. The play on contrasts looks very curious, when a naive melodramatic note is replaced by tense moments. I would especially like to note the amateur film about zombies, which the guys shoot in the course of events and subsequently show us, it looks really great.

The visual stylization of the film looks interesting. The picture is darkened, there is graininess in the frame. Great special effects and good music create a great atmosphere. The detective line provides intrigue and even if the final outcome is not particularly surprising, interest does not disappear throughout the entire timing. There are gaps and inconsistencies in the script, but I don't want to pay much attention to these shortcomings.

The main roles are played by young actors, of which the most famous is Elle Fanning. Children's naivety and their sometimes obvious replaying are the best fit for such a project. The adult roles feature good actors like Kyle Chandler and Noah Emmerich. They are not stars of the first magnitude, but they leave only a positive impression.

Super 8 is an atmospheric and inventive blend of science fiction, thriller, and family-oriented movies set in the spirit of 1980s movies. There are sentimental romantic notes, a detective line, and drama here. In places, uneven, and sometimes completely stupid, but at the same time a charming sight. This is not an original movie, but it looks great as a quality entertainment blockbuster.
