The Ghost 4K 1963

A mansion in Scotland, 1910. Professor John Hitchcock, a renowned surgeon and occultist confined to a wheelchair, entrusts his health to a young doctor, Charles Livingstone, the only one of his colleagues who agrees to inject the professor with a substance of his own creation, consisting of various poisons. Livingston is the lover of Hitchcock's young wife Margaret. She has repeatedly asked Livingston to rid her of her husband. In the end, Charles agrees, especially since, according to Hitchcock himself, nothing could be simpler: all he has to do is not give the professor the antidote on time. After Hitchcock's funeral, the notary reads the will: Margaret gets the house and the troublesome governess Catherine. Securities, jewelry, and other valuables locked in a chest are bequeathed to Father Owens' orphanage. But first, the chest must be opened. Left alone, Charles and Margaret frantically search for the key. Catherine says that the key is in the dead man's pocket. Charles opens the coffin, rummages through the clothes of the deceased, who has already begun to decompose, and finds the key. Alas, the chest contains papers of no value. Margaret has a nervous breakdown. She begins to be haunted by frightening signs: chains ringing somewhere; Hitchcock's ghost walking toward her like a zombie, and she fires her revolver at him; drops of blood falling from the ceiling onto her bed... Charles sees Hitchcock's body hanging in the attic with his own eyes. Margaret increasingly hears the sounds of a music box that her husband used to wind up when he wanted to remember happy moments from the past. The governess, a skilled medium, speaks with the voice of the deceased professor and declares that the treasure is hidden under the coffin. Margaret goes down to the crypt and finds a chest in a stone pedestal under the coffin. She injures her hand opening the chest and is astonished to find only a skull inside.

Charles wants to leave home. Margaret finds Hitchcock's jewels in his bag. Faced with betrayal, she flies into a rage and slashes her lover's face with a razor. Then she burns his corpse and prepares to kill herself by drinking poison. Hitchcock appears. But he is not a ghost. He is walking. He is completely healthy. He recovered long ago. Charles gave him a drink that induces a sleep similar to death. In revenge, the professor staged all the supposedly supernatural phenomena that so disturbed the lovers...
