Film Description
In 1960s America, when racial prejudice was still strong, a white small-town sheriff is forced to join forces with a dark-skinned Philadelphia detective to investigate a brutal murder.

Their mutual racial animosity is reinforced by the absolute dissimilarity of their characters and their different methods of investigation. Thus, the crime investigation turns into a personal showdown between tough cops. But in order to get on the trail of a mysterious killer, they must learn to work together.

4k movies reviews
An intelligent, immaculately dressed Negro sits at the train station and waits for the train to arrive. He has come from the north to visit his mother. In the city at this time, one of the bigwigs who meant a lot to the city is murdered. The first thing the cops do is search all the hot spots and the train station, and they stumble upon Negro. In the South, this already indicates that he is half to blame. But the Negro turns out to be none other than their colleague from Philadelphia, and not just a colleague, but the best homicide specialist. And he is asked to stay and help, against the wishes of the local sheriff (Rod Steiger). That's how the plot begins to unfold in this movie.

The movie is very vivid and dynamic. Full of tense scenes and dialogues, passion and aggression. The city is hot, hot from the blood spilled, from the money swirling in the air, from the sexuality of its inhabitants, from the negro (Sidney Poitier) who allows himself too much. The heat is palpable even to the viewer, it builds up as cold condensation on the monitor, it dries out everything in your mouth, it makes your thoughts sticky and your body lazy. And it is only the constant dynamics of the film that keep us on the edge between oblivion and vanity. Lots of vivid characters throughout the film, excellent characterization of even the deeply minor characters. The two main cops and especially Sidney Poitier are excellent, watching him you understand where Denzel Washington gets his courage and inspiration from. The music is great, but without the genius. The camerawork gives you a chance to take it easy and be aware of the events all the time, but sometimes it descends into primitivism. The town's manners and the settings are excellent, everything is very natural. The cast is very harmonious and there are practically none of the crude louts. The conceptual part is a little weak, the load of ideas is limp.

In general the film is excellent, unpretentious and complex-professional at the same time. No silly banality. Excellent Steiger and especially the brilliant Poitier.
