One of the most compelling films of the 1990s, despite being a seven-hour black comedy. It is a sarcastic tale of dreams, schemes, and betrayal set against the backdrop of a failed commune. The action takes place over the course of two rainy autumn days, and then a little later, but within the same month. The plot is dictated by the steps of the tango—six steps forward, six steps back. Each of the 12 segments ends with a powerful third-person voice-over—an eloquent, poetic commentary on the characters and their world.
