Alice Hight suddenly becomes a widow after many years as a homemaker. Now she must resume her singing career, as she has no other way to support her 11-year-old son, Tommy. She decides to go work in Monterey, California, and sets off on her journey. At first, Alice gets a job at a bar in Arizona, where she plays the piano, but then she is forced to move to another place and become a waitress. As time goes by, she meets a man who makes her think about starting a family again.
