Larry Donner, an instructor for aspiring writers, harbors mixed feelings toward his ex-wife, who stole his novel and went on to achieve immense popularity and great wealth from it. After giving practical advice to Owen, one of his students who dreams of getting rid of his elderly, deranged mother, he unwittingly leads him to the idea of a mutual secret pact between student and teacher: each would murder the other’s hated victim.
