A political comedy about a senator who has gone gray before his time (the reference to Bill Clinton is more than obvious) and his presidential campaign. The story is told from the perspective of a young black idealist working at the candidate's headquarters and is based on Joe Klein's book, which vividly describes his experience participating in Clinton's campaign. However, director Nichols abandoned the uncompromisingly accusatory tone of the book and took the plot in a slightly different, more universal direction. What makes politicians win? Not their merits, but the candidate's charisma, the sophistication of the campaign, and the ability to manipulate our moods and desires. And, of course, the work of image makers who know how to hide the skeletons in politicians' closets from prying eyes. In this sense, the film is very informative and interesting, and John Travolta gives one of his best performances here.
