Earth's history begins with a violent, suffocating and toxic past incompatible with life; this aspect of our planet would certainly have been very unfriendly to us, and it was more like the hell that Venus is today. As hundreds of millions of years passed, the Earth gradually acquired the characteristics that made it the inhabited paradise it is today. Until now, we have not known any other planets with the characteristics of Earth, but this does not mean that the planets observed so far are only at a primitive stage and are still not very friendly to life, at least as we know it. For most of its existence, Earth was one of these hostile planets. Primitive living things would appear in the oceans, and over time they would become more complex and diverse. Much later, the atmosphere acquired the characteristics necessary to protect life from dangerous radiation, and animals and plants began to populate the mainland. But this slow evolution was also marked by violent events and no less than five mass extinctions, which wiped out countless life forms and whose most adapted survivors are the ancestors of all the creatures that inhabit the Earth today. The history of our planet is a history full of catastrophic events, but also of periods of absolute and unbroken tranquility, shifting continents, oceans, full of perils, volcanic eruptions and the inexorable struggle of life to adapt and survive.
