The Greeks called it Hesperia, the Carthaginians named it Ispania—"land of the rabbits"—which the Romans later Latinized to Hispania, evolving into España. Some Spaniards still refer to their country as La Piel de Toro (The Bull Skin), inspired by Greek geographer Strabonis, who likened its shape to a sun-stretched bull hide. While Spain is famous for its bull-related traditions, its name traces back not to the mighty bull, but to the humble rabbit.
