According to a new study that its authors say is the most accurate to date, there are 9 million animal species on the planet.
But much of this natural wealth of animals is still unknown. Only 2 million species have been identified, meaning that about 85 percent of terrestrial animal species and 90 percent of marine species have yet to be discovered.
Researchers of these animals warn that many species on planet Earth will disappear before they are identified.
At the current rate of recording new animal species, identifying all 9 million species would take about 1,000 years, although special and recently discovered methods, such as using animal codes to identify them, could speed up this process on our planet.
