Virtually all ecosystems on Earth have been significantly transformed by human activities, and these changes have been particularly rapid in the last 80 years. Today, the fastest transformations are taking place in developing countries. Ecosystems are particularly affected by large-scale fishing, freshwater use, and agriculture. Ecosystems depend on fundamental natural cycles, such as the continuous circulation of water, carbon, and other nutrients. Human activities have permanently altered these cycles, especially in the last 60 years, through increased use of fresh water, carbon dioxide emissions, and fertilizer use. In turn, this has affected the ability of ecosystems to benefit humans. Many animal and plant species have declined in numbers, geographic coverage, or both. For example, a quarter of mammal species are now threatened with extinction. Over the past 150 years, human activities have caused 60 to 2,000 times more extinctions than would occur as a result of natural processes. Increasingly, the same species are found in different places on the planet, so as some rare species are lost and common ones spread to new areas, global biodiversity is shrinking. Globally, all genetic variation in the center of each species has diminished, especially in the case of crops and livestock.
